Visio Viewer Extension

The PC has Visio Viewer 2010 installed, should the add-ons have loaded with the install? I have tried opening the file on another PC which has the add-on and it opened with no problems. This is a business related issue and the customer needs this sorting asap, as she has no other PC to work on. The VSD format is unique to the Visio software, versions 2013 and earlier – in later versions, it has been replaced by the VSDX format. As of now, Visio is part of the Microsoft Office suite, and VSD projects can also be browsed using Microsoft Visio Viewer. By using Microsoft Visio 2016 Viewer, users can freely view Visio drawings (files with a.vsdx.vsdm.vsd.vdx.vdw.vstx.vstm.vst, or.vtx extension). The article also applies to Visio Professional 2019 and Visio Standard 2019, so it's possible to open a file saved in Visio 2019 with Visio Viewer 2016. Lucidchart Visio Viewer is online Visio viewer available for Mac, Windows and Linux. It works as a browser extension and major Internet browsers including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer. After installing this Visio viewer in your browser on Mac, you can instantly open VSD, VDX and VSDX files. So, the Visio viewer seemed to be an ideal option. However, after installing the viewer (I tried this with both 32-bit and 64-bit versions), I was still unable to open a Visio file. The best I could get was Windows asking what I would like to use to open the file and Visio viewer wasn't an option.

Visio Viewer Extension

By using Microsoft Visio 2013 Viewer, Visio users can freely distribute Visio drawings (files with a .vsdx, .vsdm, .vsd, .vdx, .vdw, .vstx, .vstm, .vst, or .vtx extension) to team members, partners, customers, or others, even if the recipients do not have Visio installed on their computers. Internet Explorer also allows for printing, although this is limited to the portion of the drawing displayed.

Viewing Visio drawings is as simple as double-clicking the drawing file in Windows Explorer. Internet Explorer will open, and Visio Viewer will render the drawing in the browser window. You can then pan and zoom in the drawing window by using toolbar buttons, keyboard shortcuts, or menu items in the shortcut menu. Also, you can see properties on any shape by opening the Properties dialog box and then selecting a shape. Some rendering and display settings are available in the Display tab of the Properties dialog box. Additionally, you can set drawing-layer visibility and colors in the Layers tab, and comment visibility and colors in the Comments tab.

To resolve this issue, install the following service pack or Visio Compatibility Pack:

2687468 Description of Visio 2010 SP2

Visio Compatibility Pack
Visio 2010 Service Pack 2 (SP2) includes the following improvements and changes for Visio 2010:

  • You can open .vsdx and .vsdm files in Visio 2010.

  • You are prompted to download the Visio Compatibility Pack when you open a .vsdx or .vsdm file in Visio 2010. The Visio Compatibility Pack contains the file format converter for .vsdx or .vsdm files.
Note Only Windows 7 or later versions of Windows support the Visio Compatibility Pack. Therefore, computers that are running a version of Windows that is earlier than Windows 7 cannot open .vsdx and .vsdm files.

  • When you open a .vsdx or .vsdm file in Visio 2010, the file is converted automatically to the .vsd file format.

  • You are notified when the image quality of a .vsdx or .vsdm file is reduced, and you are given the option to see details about the change in image quality. Elements that may experience reduced image quality include shadows, glows, reflection, soft edges, 3D effect, gradients, cropped image data, and theme effects.

Notes

  • When you open and then edit a .vsdx or .vsdm file in Visio 2010, you cannot save the file as a .vsdx or .vsdm file. However, you can save the file in a format that Visio 2010 supports.

  • The Visio 2010 API, Visio 2010 ActiveX Drawing Control, Visio 2010 iFilter, and Visio 2010 Viewer do not support .vsdx or .vsdm files.

  • You cannot edit content that is embedded in a Visio 2013 file if the content is stored in another Microsoft Office document.
